Thessalonica was founded in 316 or 315 B.C. by Cassander, king of Macedon, who named the city after his wife, the half sister of Alexander the Great. It is situated on the Thermean Gulf and has one of the best harbors in the Aegean. It lay at the crossroads of major highways running in all four directions.
